Painting Tutor - Hugh Tuckerman

Hugh is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art where he studied Drawing and Painting. He has 30+ years of teaching experience in various secondary schools in Scotland’s central belt, teaching art and design to both school pupils and to adults. He was also an art and design moderator and marker for the Scottish Examination Board. He is now a full time artist working in a range of media: watercolour, acrylic and oil painting, plus printmaking and photography. He exhibits nationally with work in a number of private collections.

Hugh’s aim is for students to enjoy an informative yet relaxed painting experience. Hugh welcomes students of all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced. He adapts his teaching to your individual abilities, experience and style. You will explore a breadth of watercolour and acrylic techniques, while gaining guidance on composition and ‘ways of seeing.’ Hugh will demonstrate traditional watercolour methods, along with more unusual techniques which will support your response to the stunning Italian landscape and architecture. You will gain confidence through the development of your sketching from direct observation and the spectacular changing Italian light. Hugh will also support you in producing more ambitious work that you can proudly show in the end of week exhibition.

Solo Traveller Comments

Group sizes are usually about eight people and generally half are single travellers. Whether you're used to travelling alone or simply taking some time out for yourself, the relaxed, friendly atmosphere at all our venues is geared towards allowing you to be part of the group when it suits and striking out on your own when you want to.

This holiday is not just a typical touristic experience as it involves travelling with a purpose and the opportunity to see the genuine and local face of Italy. Our local Italian hosts have lived abroad and know exactly what to do to avoid making our guests feel like tourists. They will always be by your side and organise trips to sites of artistic interest.

The ages of our guests vary. We understand that it is important to be with like minded people, so we always do our best to match ages for each group. Our guests are from all over the world - mostly from Australia, UK, USA, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa.

And most importantly for solo travellers - there is NO SINGLE SUPPLEMENT!

Day One

Depending on your arrival time, there will be a transfer from Catania Airport to the villa. Enjoy welcome drinks and time to relax before dinner prepared by our local chef.

Day Two

After breakfast is your first painting lesson. You will have an introduction to watercolour, looking at basic techniques, different kinds of paper, brushes etc. Lunch will follow. In the afternoon you will continue painting. Dinner is served at the villa tonight.

Day Three

Following breakfast, we head for the nearby coastal village where you will have the chance to sketch. A packed lunch will be provided to allow you to maximise your time at the location for sketching. Return back to the villa mid afternoon. Dinner will be prepared for you at the villa.

If you come during May and June, you may also have the opportunity to stop here to see the Greek tragedies performed live. We then travel to Noto to taste local ice cream at a classic Gelateria. Tonight, enjoy dinner at the villa using fish bought at the famous Siracusa fish market.

  • Tips

Our villa in Sicily is situated on a private estate, and is of typical Sicilian style and dates back to 1848. Chosen because of its location, it has some beautiful views of the surrounding areas. Upon waking in the morning to a clear blue sky, you can enjoy breakfast outside and soak up the sea views.

The villa has luxurious bedrooms, all decorated in a modern style with ensuite bathrooms. Each room has a view of either the sea, almond grove or the Sicilian countryside. There is a beautiful spacious dining room, the perfect setting to enjoy some Sicilian dishes.

We have based our venue in the south east of the island: the place where it all began. The surrounding area is dotted with well know historical sites – such as the Siracusa Greek Theatre, Temples of Agrigento and various Baroque towns such as Noto and Ragusa.

Within the grounds of the estate there is an outdoor pool, which is encircled by almond and olive trees. After a dip, you can sit back and relax on the terrace and enjoy the sight and sound of the sea. You are sure to find this retreat inspiring!
