Meet in the port city of Genoa, then take a ferry across the Tyrrhenian Sea to Sardinia for a week of sensational walking around Bosa, Pula, Cagliari and Cala Gonone, taking in the panoramas, food, wine, ancient history and music that make up this island's tantalising diversity.
From Bosa, our base on the west coast, visit Alghero, with its Catalan culture and language history, extensive harbour, watchtowers and city walls. Drive on to the nearby Grotta di Nettuno and descend the many steps to a marine cave carved into the sheer cliff-face with winding passages going back into the rock - stalagmites and stalactites making fabulous shapes.
On our drive from Bosa to Pula, near Cagliari, we take a detour to the intriguing Barumini nuragic village, evidence of an ancient culture. We continue on to Pula where, over two days, we go to Cagliari to visit its walled historic centre and great shops and spend a morning wandering the Roman ruins of Nora and visiting the fascinating little museum in Pula.
From Pula, we head back north up the eastern coast of Sardinia to the gorgeous coastal town of Cala Gonone for two days of vigorous walks along panoramic coastal paths and inland ravines.
From Sardinia, we take the ferry back to Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, and drive down the west coast to stay two nights at Basilicata's seaside gem, Maratea, with its breath-taking sea views and wooded hillsides.
On to Sicily, to walk rocky paths on Lipari, climb volcanoes on Mt. Etna and Vulcano Island and travel to Taormina to listen to the extraordinary acoustics of the ancient Greek theatre, savour delicious marzipan fruits and wander its pretty flower-decked streets. In Piazza Armerina see the extensive mosaic paving of this well-preserved Roman villa and at Agrigento wander the amazing ruins of the valley of Greek temples.
In Syracuse, where Greek and Moorish influences are still so evident, experience an historic puppet show and some unforgettable seafood meals.
The tour finishes at Catania Airport.
