BRIEF ITINERARY
Day 1
Idyllic walks among medieval towns far off the beaten path. Hike gentle hills in Slovakia's Stiavnické Mountains, the caldera of a collapsed volcano. Take in 360-degree panoramas of mountains and lakes en route to Banská Stiavnica, an ancient mining village with elegant architecture and cobblestone lanes.
Days 2-3
Feel on top of the world as you hike above tree line in the Low Tatras - the views are superb. Relax over an authentic hiker's lunch at an alpine chalet. A path through Kvacianska Valley, a rugged steep-walled canyon, leads past watermills to quaint hamlets dotted with traditional wooden houses. Join a guide to explore a preserved 18th century Slovak village and 16th century wooden church.
Day 4
Górale (highlander) traditions and cuisine, including oscypek, a delicious smoked cheese. Choose an easygoing route through spruce forests, across creeks and past waterfalls or a more technical hike above timberline in the High Tatras. Need a boost? Try Polish-style coffee - thick, strong and enjoyed black with lots of sugar.
Days 5-6
Experience one of Europe's most spectacular hikes - complete with granite spires and glacial lakes - in the High Tatras, hailed as the continent's grandest range after the Alps. Sample vodkas, flavoured with everything from horseradish to plum, in vibrant Zakopane, Poland's winter sports capital. Enjoy an easygoing stroll through the countryside, accompanied by farmers tending their sheep. Our adventure wraps up in Kraków, anchored by Europe's largest market square, dating from the 13th century.
